Causes and Prevention of Snoring

Loud, disruptive snoring may not seem like a large issue. However, sometimes it is the symptom of larger, more dangerous problems. Fortunately, snoring is highly treatable. If you snore and would like to learn more about treating it, cosmetic dentist Dr. Sue Wendling is a specialist.

What causes snoring?

Virtually every snoring instance is caused by a sleeping person’s blocked airway during the deep state of sleep. The tongue and throat tissue slide back into the throat and the snoring sound is created by the soft palate and uvula vibrating together. Air passes over these organs when the person exhales and inhales.

Reducing and Eliminating Snoring

Lifestyle choices like alcohol consumption before bedtime, smoking and poor diet are key contributors to snoring. Reducing these is the first step. Also, your sleeping position can be a factor. Some people prop their heads up with multiple pillows to reduce instances. Some may need an oral appliance, however. Many different types exist and a cosmetic dentist who specializes in snoring prevention is the best avenue for learning more.

If you or a loved one continuously snores, and you live in the Portland, Oregon area, the dental professionals at the offices of Dr. Sue Wendling are here to help. Please contact Wendling Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry today.

Dangers of Sleep Apnea

People who snore loudly may be in more danger than they think. Snoring could be an indicator of sleep apnea—a condition that in its most extreme cases can lead to suffocation and death. For people in the Portland, Oregon area who feel they have trouble sleeping, sleep apnea dentist Dr. Sue Wendling is here to help.

What is Sleep Apnea?

In short, sleep apnea inhibits a person's ability to take in oxygen during sleep. In this relaxed state, a sleep apnea sufferer's airway becomes blocked. When oxygen flow is blocked, the body's natural response is to violently push back on the throat blockage with a rush of air. This is disruptive to healthy sleep and people can wake up ten times an hour, though they're not consciously aware of this. They just wake up feeling groggy and sluggish the next day. However, in extreme conditions, the body isn't able to force the blockage out of the throat and the person suffocates.

If this continues long term, sleep apnea can elevate risks for heart disease and stroke. Lesser complications include depression, short-term memory loss, impotence and insomnia. It's best to educate yourself about the dangers of sleep apnea.
