How dental implants work

The implant replaces the tooth root and the porcelain crown affixed to it replaces the missing tooth.

Placement of the dental implant is a surgical process and requires several months of healing time before the crown can be set in place. After the sturdy titanium rod is seated into the jawbone, time must pass for the bone tissue to grow in closely around it (called osseointegration). The second step is to place a tiny abutment on the top of the implant, which is also a surgical process, but quicker and easier than the implant placement. After a couple of weeks, when the gum tissue has healed around this abutment, the porcelain crown is bonded to it. You now have a new tooth root and a new tooth.
