What problems can porcelain veneers treat?
Porcelain veneers are one of the most versatile cosmetic procedures we offer. Because they are custom made to fit your needs precisely, they can correct a wide range of cosmetic problems, including slightly crooked teeth , oddly sized or unevenly shaped teeth, staining that resists tooth whitening procedures, small chips and cracks, or pitting. Veneers are a fast and simple solution to many minor defects. If you have more extensive dental problems, they may not be appropriate and Dr. Wendling in Portland can suggest alternatives.
Are porcelain veneers right for me?
If you are unhappy with your smile, particularly due to crooked or broken teeth, or severe discoloration, porcelain veneers may be right for you.
How long does the procedure take?
It takes place in two office visits – one for your fitting and tooth preparation, after which you will leave with a temporary set of veneers, and one to permanently bond your custom veneers.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
Depending on the type of veneers used and the quality of your dental hygiene, you can expect them to last from 10 to 20 years.
What is 'instant orthodontics'?
Usually it is a nickname for porcelain veneers because in only two visits they replace crookedness or misalignment with a straight, well-aligned look. Thus they appear to have done orthodontic work in straightening your teeth. The term can also include use of dental bonding, porcelain crowns, and Invisalign. We use it to include those extra things.
Are there large differences between the brands of porcelain veneers?
Over recent years, improvements in veneers overall have given us stronger materials. One big current difference is between Lumineers, which are in the style of the first veneers used 25-30 years ago, and other brands such as Empress, which are a more advanced version. With more recent brands, the teeth must be prepared by shaving off part. The advantage of Empress and others is that stains on the underlying tooth surface will not show through, as they might show through on the thinner Lumineers.
Further, since Lumineers are uniformly very thin, they would not be the best choice for correcting crooked teeth. With other brands, the veneer can be made slightly thicker on the side where the tooth is slanting inwards. This gives the appearance of a straight tooth. With Lumineers, the angle of the tooth below will still be visible, even after the veneer is applied.
Each cosmetic dentist forms his or her own preference for one or more brands, and in our office, we use the more current style of Empress veneers, as they are very strong, durable, and provide a more uniform appearance.
