Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
TMJ Disorder, or TMD, is a common but serious condition that can not only affect your dental health, but your general health as well. It is a misalignment of the jaw joint which connects your lower jaw and skull. You can feel it move if you open your mouth with a finger pressing gently in front of your ear.
Any misalignment of this small joint can cause a variety of symptoms affecting the jawbone itself and the muscles, nerves, and other structures that work with it.
Some of these symptoms are:
- Headaches (often thought of as migraines)
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Tooth grinding (bruxism), often during sleep
- Uneven or excessive tooth wear
- Loose teeth
- Teeth that are shifting
- Jaw pain and soreness
- Clicking and popping of your jaw
- Loss of range of jaw motion, including the inability to fully open or close your mouth
