Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

Serving Portland, Lake Oswego, & West Linn, Oregon

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ Disorder, or TMD) is a common but serious condition that can not only affect your dental health, but your general health as well. It is a misalignment of the jaw joint which connects your lower jaw and skull. You can feel it move if you open your mouth with a finger pressing gently in front of your ear.

Any misalignment of this small joint can cause a variety of symptoms affecting the jawbone itself and the muscles, nerves, and other structures that work with it. Some of these symptoms are:

  • Headaches (often thought of as migraines)
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Tooth grinding (bruxism), often during sleep
  • Uneven or excessive tooth wear
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that are shifting
  • Jaw pain and soreness
  • Clicking and popping of your jaw
  • Loss of range of jaw motion, including the inability to fully open or close your mouth

If you are suffering from these or other symptoms that you believe might be caused by TMD, it is important that you seek help as soon as possible. TMD is a serious condition that can worsen if left untreated. As an instructor at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), Dr. Wendling is highly trained in diagnosing and treating TMD, and also teaches neuromuscular dentistry to other dentists.

Not all dentists can diagnose TMD, because specialized equipment is necessary. Dr. Wendling has invested in high-end diagnostic technology and will be pleased to use it to relieve your pain and treat its cause.
